Pay attention to these 4 signals that you need to have your car transmission repaired.
The transmission is a complex part of your car engine, and when it goes wrong you can be faced with an expensive auto transmission repair bill. The good news is that in many cases, if you identify the problem quickly, you can save yourself an expensive repair bill. Some problems such as loose cables and low fluid levels are easy to fix, but if those problems are not taken care of they can turn into much more serious issues.
Here are 4 common signs that you need auto transmission repair.
The Check Engine Light
The check engine light is there for a reason. If you have ever seen the popular TV show the Big Bang Theory you will know that the check engine light is a running joke among a lot of people. The light is there to warn you that there is an irregularity in the engine. This irregularity could be a minor vibration that is too subtle for you to notice yourself as the driver, but still a sign that something needs adjusted. A good garage will be able to scan your engine for you and figure out what the problem is so you can conduct repairs before the problem gets serious.
The transmission should put the vehicle into the right gear first time, every time. If the transmission responds slowly or simply refuses to let you change – especially coming into or out of neutral then this is an obvious sign of a problem. If you are lucky, the issue will simply be a worn-out clutch, but it could be something more serious. For this reason, you should get it looked at as soon as possible.
Grinding and Shaking
If you notice that your car makes grinding sounds when you change gear, or if you feel shaking when the car changes gear for you in the case of an automatic vehicle, then this is a sign that there is an issue with the transmission. Grinding gears can have a number of causes, including worn gear synchronisers, a worn clutch, or simply some cables that need adjusting. Note that grinding sounds are normally a clear sign of a developing problem, so you should not put off getting the issue seen to. The sooner you take your car to a garage, the better.
Humming and Clunking
You probably spend a lot of time in your car, and will get used to how it sounds when it is healthy. If you hear unusual sounds such as whining, humming or clunking, do not ignore them. Every car has its own sound, and an automatic transmission may produce some buzzing or humming even when it is healthy. However, if you hear clunking on a car – whether it has an automatic or a manual transmission – you should get it looked at. Strange noises may be a sign of a problem with the car’s transmission, or it could be an issue with your vehicle’s constant velocity joints, or the differential.
The above are just a handful of signs that your car may be in desperate need of auto transmission repair. There are many other things which can be a sign that your transmission has a problem. If you notice any strange smells or noises from your car, or notice that there are signs of fluid underneath your car after it has been sitting still for a while, take it to the garage immediately. It is vital that you take good care of your car, because a failed transmission can be an expensive thing to put right.
